Weekend Prevue: Round Three

Hoopers Hunt Third Win in a Row

The HoopersHoopers (2-0) the only unbeaten team remaining in the competition and aims to extend their winning exploits even further at the expense of the winless Bay City Lions(0-3), when the Lucozade Sport Men’s Basketball Championship enters its fourth week @ the Mobay Cricket club this weekend.

Saturday’s opener will see either the end of or the extension of two streaks. Hoopers who sits in the third spot with 4 points will aim for the top spot as one of the co-leaders Sav-la-Mar Hawks will be idle this weekend due to Hopewell Cobras withdrawal from the competition due to problems within their club. While sports is often times unpredictable, it will take a herculean effort from Lions to put the brakes on Hoopers. Lions welcome the return of their lethal marksman Richard “Lenky” Thomas to the pride; as such Hoopers must guard against complacency and neutralize their opponents from early in this encounter.

With three games behind them, Granville Jaguars (1-2) are on four points while Railway Tigers who have only played two games so far sits with three points. Both will do battle in game two. The two are similar in their playing styles as they push the ball every chance they get, so expect a flurry of plays in what should be an exciting uptempo game. With a win capable of pulling either team in touching distance of the league leaders, expect an interesting and exciting affair between these ‘feline cousins’. Will speed, power or determination prevail in this sibling rivalry?

On Sunday, fans will see the reigning league MVP - Adolph “Stocky” Erskine in action when the fifth position Innercity Avalanche  (1-1) take on co-leaders Granville Wolfpack (2-1) @ 5pm. Both teams had their unbeaten status downgraded in contrasting fashion last weekend. Wolfpack were tamed by their Granville counterpart, Jaguars in a 26 point beat down, while Avalanche suffered a heart-wrenching single point loss to main rivals Sav-La-Mar Hawks, in what was easily the best game of the season.

Avalanche relishes big games and returning to winning form is foremost on their minds. Wolfpack must be prepared to withstand an expected avalanche of attacks, a long chilly blizzard will have them ‘purring in their den’. If they are determined to resist, not even the addition of Adolph Erskine can prevent Wolfpack’s victorious outcome. Albert Munroe and his pack of wolves would however strive to put a damper on those expectations.

Patrons are reminded that entry fees for regular season games are $100.00 and $50 for children 12 and under. Come join us as we sport a winning attitude.
