Weekend Prevue: Round Seven
Three
Times The Crunch
Three teams vie for final
berths in the Mid-Season final of the Western Basketball
Association’s Lucozade Sport Men’s Basketball
Championship. On Super Saturday, April 19, 2008, a
triple header marks the final set of games in the first
round of what has been a very competitive season of the
MBC since its inception three years running. Three title
chasing games will be on court at the Montego Bay
Cricket Club court tipping off @ 4pm.
Innercity Avalanche, Hoopers and Sav-La-Mar Hawks all
with a 4-1 record share the standing lead with 9 points
each. All three having a win and loss against each
other, this further validates the leagues
competitiveness.
It is crunch time for the trio! A win for either two
will automatically secure the two spots in the April 26
finals, where Ten Thousand dollars ($10,000.00) and the
Lucozade Sport Mid-Season Finals Trophy is up for grabs.
Neither team has the luxury of the dropping points
against lower ranked opponents, the consequence of which
may effectively put a halt to their mid-season
ambitions.
Any combination of results could see the organizers
going to the rule book to break any deadlock that may
occur. All three clubs will no doubt aspire to punch
their own ticket by taking care of their opponents,
while rooting for the others to slip up. After 5 games,
this is how the trio stacks up statistically:
Hoopers are looking good with a scoring average of 74.2
points per game while giving up 58.4 points defensively.
Their points differential is a healthy 79 on the plus
side. The whipped Hawks 74-50 in the 2008 season opener,
only to have Avalanche end their four game win streak in
overtime last weekend in overtime (65-60).
Avalanche is scoring an average of 65 points per game,
but have conceded 62.6 points on the defensive end.
Their points differential is plus 53. They defeated
Hoopers 65-60 in overtime last weekend, while Hawks
snipped them 67-66 earlier in the season.
Hawks has the weakest team statistics of the three.
Offensively they are averaging 65 points per game, while
on defense they are giving up 62.6 points which leaves
their differential at 12. They were plucked 50-74 by
Hoopers then rebounded as they edged Avalanche 67-66 in
their match up.
Ironically, these three contenders are not unfamiliar to
the mid-season. They have consistently appeared at some
point or the other in the past two seasons - feat no
other team has ever accomplished. Avalanche competed on
two occasions; they defeated Hawks in 2006 whilst losing
to Hoopers last year.
Can Avalanche make it a hat-trick of appearances or is
Hoopers on course for back to back titles and holding on
to their trophy. Or will Hawks make a return and snatch
victory this time? All these variables make for a very
intriguing and exhilarating weekend of basketball to
close out the first round of the regular season.

Hoopers vs. Granville Wolfpack @ 6pm
Sav-La-Mar Hawks vs. Granville Jaguars @ 8pm
