Weekend Prevue:
Round
Ten
Granville Jaguars Look to Extend Win Streak
A mere three (3) points separates the last placed team
from the leaders in the seven team Lucozade Sport
sponsored Western Basketball Association Men’s
Basketball Championship (MBC), when action continues
this weekend at the Montego Bay Cricket Club. Teams will
be aiming to get maximum two (2) points in order to
better their position in the standings.
With
the competitive nature of this season’s championship, a
single point will make a world of difference to all
teams as the all important playoff round looms.
Relegation lies in wait for the unfortunate club who
occupies the last place after the final set of matches
on Super Saturday – June 14, 2008.
Innercity Avalanche (5-2) fresh off a break last week
will host Sav-La-Mar Hawks (5-3) in this weekend’s
opening match at 5pm. Not much is unknown about these
two adversaries and the memorable duels between them
over the years. One will never be sure who will prevail
but be certain they will bring out the best in each
other. Both teams sit on 12 points but Avalanche have a
game in hand, Hawks lost points by way of a forfeiture
the result of showing up late for their game against Bay
City Lions last Saturday. In their only meeting this
season, Avalanche won by the thinnest margin (1 point)
in another thriller played on back on March 22.
As Railway Tigers (3-4) and Bay City Lions (2-6) both
residing on ten (10) points each get ready to bring down
the curtains on Saturday evening at 7pm, prepare for two
feline cousins to bring it – providing some entertaining
end-to-end basketball action. Tigers previously devoured
Lions in their first round meeting by 19 points!! With
much at stake, neither team is expected to roll over and
play dead. Lions with aiming to extend their new found
good fortunes after going winless in their first six
matches. Riding an unfamiliar two game win streak,
Lions’ confidence is on a rise, so Tigers can expect a
tougher catfight this time around.
The two teams representing the community of Granville in
St. James will resume and take their neighborhood
rivalry centre-court this Sunday at 5:30pm. Local
derbies are usual intense and competitive, but based on
current form of both squads, this game could be
lopsided. Although from the same community, both teams
are heading into opposite directions. Jaguars (5-3) now
own the league’s current win streak of four (4), they
were also the first team this season to top the 100
point plateau. All this said, Jaguars have leapt
unnoticeably up the standings. Wolfpack (2-6) who are
experiencing internal squabbles have not a won a game
since week 2 (March 15) when they were perfect at 2-0.
It has been two months in the doldrums, suffering six
consecutive defeats another league record this season.
Wolfpack are yet to conquer Jaguars and if they don’t
acquire some antidote, fast – the beating stick
treatment will continue.
Between halftimes fans will get an opportunity to win
prizes from several of the league sponsors’ i.e.
Lucozade Sport, Pharmaton and Kool Runnings Water Park.
