Weekend Prevue: Round Six
Hoopers Eye Mid-Season Finals
Action heats up this weekend at
the Montego Bay Cricket club court as the Western
Basketball Association’s Lucozade Sport Men’s Basketball
Championship enters the penultimate round of games
heading into the mid-season break.
As mid-season approaches, five clubs are within reach to
capture the only two spots to contest for the Lucozade
Sport Mid-Season trophy and Ten Thousand dollars on
Saturday, April 26th, 2008.
With just two rounds of matches remaining, Hoopers sits
atop the standings with two other teams breathing down
their necks by a single point differential. Two other
clubs also lurks precariously close behind the leading
trio by mere one and two points respectively. Hoopers
boast a perfect 4-0 record; has pole position and are
one point away from sealing one of the spots in the
final for the second year running. They face a litmus
test of sorts this weekend as they must stave off the
challenge of last year’s mid-season final opponent
Innercity Avalanche who resides in third spot.
Innercity Avalanche (3-1) seems to be handicapped this
year as a result of losing several key players. This
setback has granted this young squad is getting some
much needed time under the lights and is right there at
the top of the pile, so expect a keen tussle when both
meet on Sunday.
Sav-La-Mar Hawks (3-1) climbed into second position
after their overtime victory last weekend against the
Granville Wolfpack. Hawks are perfectly poised and are
on a three game winning streak also favoring their
chances of reaching another major final. A win for them
this weekend and a loss for Hoopers will see a three-way
tie at the top, which would present an interesting
scenario when the final set of games prior to the
mid-season break arrives on April 19.
The 2006 Division 2 Champions, Railway Tigers (2-2) have
thus far surpassed their poor performances last season,
by doing better competitively. They are growing from
strength to strength, putting themselves in privilege
position to make it to the finals once they remain
consistent. Of all the aspirants, Tigers’ path maybe the
most treacherous as directly in their way is a clash
with nemesis, Sav-La-Mar Hawks and Innercity Avalanche
who are in no hurry to make things easy for the cats.
Granville Jaguars (1-3) returning to action after
getting a bye last weekend currently resides in sixth
position. Eager to recapture winning ways and restore
their true intentions of winning the coveted Lucozade
Sport Championship trophy must perform at the expected
level. Although their season so far been disappointing –
never count them out as one win could spur a run for
this talented club who made the two finals last season
winning one. Their opponents this Saturday will pit them
against their feline cousins the Bay City Lions (0-5).
Lions are yet to win a single game, despite their
competitive display during the first half of all their
previous games. For Lions to remain in the big leagues
they must prove that they can maintain their first half
chemistry for the entire game!
