Weekend Prevue: Round Nine

Hawks, Jaguars in Spotlight

Matches in the return round of the highly competitive Lucozade Sport Western Men’s Basketball Championship (MBC) continues this weekend at its usual home, the Montego Bay Cricket Club.

Last weekend’s results saw the two mid-season finalists losing while the third and fourth placed teams both making valuable ground, defeating said finalists by 18 and 17 points respectively.

Hoopers, Innercity Avalanche and Sav-La-Mar Hawks all knotted together on 12 points (not the first time this season either) closely trailed by Jaguars one point adrift, the championship is now poised to be a keen tussle over the coming weeks as teams jostle to position themselves for better placing.

The relegation battle also intensifies as the three lower placed teams are separated by only a single point too. This happened after Bay City Lions won the first time in eight matches last weekend, when they over-powered Granville Wolfpack drawing level on points with Railway Tigers who didn’t have a match last week.

Avalanche (5-2) will be idle this week, thus giving three other teams in the upper half of the table an excellent opportunity to climb to the top.

Wolfpack (2-5) find themselves easy preys instead of predators by nature since suffering five consecutive defeats. They must be wishing they were back in the division 2 where there skills were more menacing in comparison to their transition to the big league. A disheartened Wolfpack unit will go up against Tigers (2-4) a team which trails by a point but still has a game in hand. Tigers are also on a downward spiral since dropping three straight games, however after resting last week expect Tigers to dominate and run away victors against their wounded and struggling kin.

Lions (1-6) who tasted victory for the first time this season, have to be weary of the euphoric state as circling directly overhead is their nemesis – Hawks (5-2). The birds are squawking in eager anticipation of their evening meal. Once Lions can somehow neutralize Hawks explosive offense and forge attacks in their impregnable defense, then they have a chance of an upset but if all that fails, Hawks will skillfully pick them to pieces.

Hoopers (5-2) and Jaguars (4-3) should provide the most drama and excitement this weekend. While Jaguars are boasting a three game win streak from their last four games. Hoopers on the other hand have tasted defeat in three of their last four encounters. Depending on one’s viewpoint Hoopers won the previous two meeting between these two (last season’s President’s Cup Knockout final and their previous round one meeting this year). Momentum is definitely in Jaguars favour based on current form, expect this encountered to be a close and hard-fought one - from start to finish.
