WBA issues 'historic' ban; two others fined

The basketball career of Hopewell Vipers former player/coach Dwight 'Bazzie' Reid has effectively ended following Tuesday's decision by the Disciplinary Committee of the Western Basketball Association to ban him for 10 years and fine him $13,000.

The four-man committee that met at the offices of the St James Football Association, found Reid guilty on three counts, namely, bringing the game into disrepute; attacking an official and making threats at an official.

Two others players also faced the panel.

Christopher Bowen was found not guilty for leaving the court and insulting an official, while Kirk Blake was suspended for six games and fined $3,000 for making threats to an official.

A total of $26,000 worth of fines were handed out as Hopewell Vipers were also fined $10,000 for failing to control their supporters throughout the three-game series.

A fourth player, Oneil Grey, was named in the reports but was not summoned to the hearing and will be dealt with later.

The punishments came out of the August 14 incident that forced the premature end to Game Three of the WBA Lucozade Division One Finals at the Montego Bay Cricket Club.

Sav Hawks led Vipers by over 20 points with less than two minutes to go when Reid who had fouled out of the game, started to curse referee Deon Williams before leaving the team bench with a number of other players. He then went into the stands where he continued his tirade against the official then threw the contents of a drink bottle on him, sparking a fracas that ended the game.

Reports coming out of the meeting are that the 30-year-old Reid showed very little remorse for his behavior and stormed out.

Reid who recently completed a season long suspension for abusing the same official will serve five years with the other five being suspended and he was advised by the panel to seek counseling for his anger management problems as a condition for his reentry into the game.

Blake meanwhile will serve three matches with three being suspended.
