  Louisville falls to West Virginia

Samardo Samuels drove around Kenneth Faried in the second half. (By Michael Clevenger, The Courier-Journal) March 20, 2009MORGANTOWN, WVa. – The University of Louisville found another way to lose a close game Saturday at No. 9 West Virginia which was televised live on ESPN. Despite sophmore and national player Samardo Samuels' 16 point-effort, the 77-74 defeat left head coach Rick Pitino nearly speechless over two late calls that favored the home team.

While fixating on the officials late, the West Virginia Mountaineers’ 1-3-1 zone had the Cardinals (13-8, 4-4 Big East) locked out in the final minutes and turned the season’s biggest win to yet another late-game loss.

It was deflating because it was the Cards fourth loss this season by five points or less. Deflating because the Cards led for 18 minutes and 59 seconds of the second half – including a one-point lead with 17 seconds remaining.

UWV's Da'Sean Butler, the veteran guard scored a season-high 27 points, including the go-ahead basket with 16 seconds remaining. Samardo also grabbed game-high 9 rebounds.
