Cardinals Fall in OT to No. 16 Panthers, 82-77

Pittsburg, PA (01-17-2010): The Cardinals squandered a five-point lead with 54 seconds left in regulation and fell to the Panthers 82-77 in overtime Saturday before 12,781 fans in the Petersen Events Center.

It's not a loss the Cards (12-6, 3-2 Big East Conference) will easily shrug off. They controlled the game throughout regulation — their biggest deficit was just two points and they trailed for only 3:06.

Samardo Samuels and Preston Knowles tried to carry the Cards. With his teammates struggling from the perimeter, Knowles made his first four shots en route to 21 points. Samuels scored 25, shooting 12of20 and dominating Pitt big men Gary McGhee and Dante Taylor.

“We wanted to not give them a lot of threes,” Pitt coach Jamie Dixon said. “We kind of left Dante and Gary on an island. Samardo Samuels is as good as any post guy in the country.”

When Samuels scored his final basket with 54 seconds left in regulation, UofL held a seemingly comfortable 68-63 lead and had quieted the crowd. All that was left was to make some free throws.

“In the overtime we ignored Samardo and we tried to go one-on-one and we did things that we didn't do the whole game,” Louisville's coach - Rick Pitino said. “… We've got to go where our bread was buttered. We didn't in overtime, and it cost us.”
