Louisville suffers first Big East loss to No.4 Villanova

Louisville, KY (01-12-2010): The University of Louisville Cardinals surrendered a first half advantage before succumbing to No. 4 Villanova University Wildcats 92-84 in a high-octane Big East Conference encounter last night before a live national audience.

Samardo Samuels drove around Kenneth Faried in the second half. (By Michael Clevenger, The Courier-Journal) March 20, 2009Sophomore forward Samardo Samuels led the Louisville attack with perfect shooting, connecting on 4-of-4 from the field and 13-of-13 from the line for a team-high 21 points. He also grabbed seven rebounds and rejected four shots, but the Cardinals had no answers for guard Scottie Reynolds who torched them for a season-high 36 points.

Louisville led by as many as 17 points in the first half before Villanova cut the deficit to seven (43-36) close to halftime. The Wildcats came into the contest averaging just 13 turnovers a game but by halftime had already committed 17 as the Louisville defense forced them into numerous mistakes.

The Wildcats (15-1, 4-0 Big East), however, reeled off a 17-2 run early in the second half to take the lead, but the Cardinals still managed hung around, thanks to spectacular free-throw shooting which saw them make 39-of-45 attempts - tying a school record for most free throws made in a conference game. Soon after Reynolds began his exploits and took over the game down the stretch.

Louisville (12-5, 3-1 Big East) will face another conference foe, University of Pittsburgh, on Saturday at noon.
