UK wins the battle of Kentucky

Samardo Samuels drove around Kenneth Faried in the second half. (By Michael Clevenger, The Courier-Journal) March 20, 2009Lexington, KY (01-04-2010): No. 3 University of Kentucky won the Bluegrass State battle over arch-rivals University of Louisville 71-62 last Saturday in front of a sellout crowd at Rupp Arena. Kentucky (15-0) matched its best start in 40 years while breaking a two-game losing streak to Louisville. Forward Samardo Samuels finished with nine points and nine rebounds but was dominated in the match-up with his Kentucky counterpart Demarcus Cousins who produced 18 points and a season-high 18 rebounds.

Louisville fell in an early hole after missing 18 of its first 19 shots but fought gallantly to pull in front 42-41 with 9:51 remaining in the contest. They had no answer for freshman phenom John Walls, however, as Walls took over the final minutes to will Kentucky to victory. Louisville shot just 32 percent from the field and also lost the battle in the paint 40-24.
