Basketball Scholarships Awarded to Star Search Campers
MIAMI,
FL - August 14, 2007 - Two more local student/athletes -
Adrian Blake and Leighton Jon Smith - were awarded full
basketball scholarships t o academic institutions in the
United States. Both attended the recently concluded
Jamaica Basketball Development (JBD), Inc/Jamaica
Basketball Association (JABA)-sponsored Star Search
Basketball & Life Skills Development Camp recently held
at the G.C. Foster College in St. Catherine, bringing
the number of scholarship awardees to three so far.
Blake, captain of the Wolmer's Boys High School
basketball team in the ISSA/KFC Southern Conference,
will be attending University of Rio Grande in Rio
Grande, Ohio. The 6' 5", 205-pound forward will enroll
as a freshman, and will be the latest Jamaican to invade
the American Mideast Conference South Division, joining
the Cedarville University trio of Ricardo Alliman,
Daniel Rose, and Chris Walker. Rio Grande will face
Cedarville at least twice in the upcoming season.
Smith, also from Wolmer's, is heading to St. Benedict's
Prep in Newark, New Jersey. He joins
present high school sensation, Samardo Samuels, who
plans to play for coach Rick Pitino and the University
of Louisville Cardinals beginning in the 2008-09 season.
Smith will also enroll as a freshman, and at 6' 8" - 210
pounds, is expected to play the power forward and center
positions. Both players are coached locally by Howard
Harvey.
