8th Annual Star Search Camp set for July

MIAMI, FL – April 4, 2008 -- The 8th annual Star Search Basketball & Life Skills Development Camp is set for July 13-18 at the G.C. Foster College of Physical Education & Sports in St. Catherine, Jamaica. The camp, which showcases local basketball talent, is responsible for over 75 student/athletes securing full basketball scholarships to U.S. high schools, colleges, and universities over the past seven years

The Jamaica Basketball Development (JBD) Inc, Jamaica Amateur Basketball Association (JABA), NIKE, and Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) are the official sponsors of the camp. G.C. Foster College will once again accommodate the student/athletes for the duration of the camp. “We are excited to be able to host this camp for another year and to provide a positive influence on all camp participants,” declared Gary Henry, President of JBD, Inc. “Young adults, now more than ever, need positive support and mentorship to guide character development and to help them work towards their future aspirations."

Registration begins on Sunday, July 13, 2008 at 6:00 p.m. at G.C. Foster College. Expected to be in attendance this year are former camp attendees Mugabe Thomas, Samardo Samuels, Daniel Rose, Ricardo Alliman, Christopher Walker, Jason Francis, and Orville Perkins . Several U.S. and local coaches will also attend.

On Wednesday, July 16, 2008, JBD Inc, and JABA plan to visit Marlie Mount and Old Harbour Bay Primary schools in St. Catherine to continue their “Kids First” Program. Officials from both organizations, as well as some overseas-based student/athletes, will read with the students and stress to them the importance of academics. Books and school supplies will also be presented to both schools.

The Jamaica Basketball Development (JBD), Inc. is a not-for-profit organization that is committed to the development of student/athletes in Jamaica. It is comprised of former Jamaican national basketball team members now living in the United States. Its mission is to enrich the lives of Jamaican student/athletes, by providing life skills development and opportunities to further their educational development through the game of basketball
