Samuels, Evans live up to their
rankings in July period
The most intense
month in the recruiting calendar just wrapped up with
two key events and here's a recap of how they went.
At the inaugural Nike Global Challenge in Portland,
Ore., the stars were out and they put on quite a show.
Tyreke Evans, a combo guard at American Christian
(Aston, Pa.), won the MVP as he led his team to the
championship round. Evans is currently rated the No. 2
rising senior by RISE and his performance at the Global
Challenge showed that he's pushing for the top spot.
But RISE's current No. 1 player, Helen Cox (Harvey, La.)
big man Greg Monroe, and the No. 5 player, St.
Benedict's Prep (Newark, N.J.) big Samardo Samuels, also
had monster showings.
Monroe led his team to the championship and had a huge
game in the finals, scoring 27 points and 15 rebounds.
Numbers like those may be enough to hold on to the top
spot in the Class of 2008 rankings, but Samuels can't be
far behind.
In a head-to-head battle, Samuels shot 11-for-11 from
the floor and finished with 26 points and 12 boards,
while Monroe had 12 points and seven boards.
Samuels also shot 13-for-14 from the floor and netted 30
points against elite power forward Drew Gordon of
Archbishop Mitty (San Jose, Calif.).
Both Monroe and Samuels were named to the United States
All-Tournament team.
