Samardo Samuels named
MVP at Top 100 Camp
CHARLOTTESVILLE,
Va. - Samardo Samuels was named Camp MVP after
leading his Spurs club to the National Basketball
Players Association (NBPA) Top 100 Camp Gold
Championship.
It was no surprise to this writer that Samuels was named
the NBPA Top 100 Camp MVP. Not only did he lead his team
to the camp championship, but he was one of the top two
or three-rated performers each of the three days I was
in Charlottesville. His steady, high level of play was
rewarded at the end of the week.
A player who was better than advertised in the eyes of
camp director Tim McCormick and player personnel
director Bob Gibbons was 6-foot-4 Elliot Williams, who
was awarded Most Improved Player.
Samardo Samuels, 6-9 senior power forward, St.
Benedict’s (NJ): The future Louisville Cardinal is
almost too talented, as he showed on one sequence, where
he hit an 18-footer, pinned a shot on D, pushed the rock
and dished it, then got it back for a reverse flush.
After saying all that, the widebody, a Mike Redd
lookalike, was at his best when he focused on scoring in
the post and dominating the glass, two things no one
could stop him from doing.
Gold Championship Game: Spurs 73, Suns 50
NBPA Background
The Top 100 High School Basketball Camp was created 11
years ago by the NBA Players Association to assist the
Top 100 High School Student Athletes in the development
of their individual and life skills, both on and off the
court.
Each summer, 25 current and former NBA stars work or
visit the camp to advise all campers on how they can
make their basketball goals a reality by teaching NBA
moves and training techniques. The Top 100 Camp utilizes
experts in a variety of fields to help lay a solid
foundation for success both on and off the court.
In addition to on court education, presentations and
mentoring, the Top 100 Camp has designed a special
program to help parents and guardians in assisting their
son’s career. Daily seminars focus on recruiting issues,
peer pressure, nutrition, S.A.T. preparation, NCAA
rules, goal setting and stress management.
The NBA Players Association offers a unique game plan
for all campers who dream of one day becoming an NBA
player.
