Half of Men's Basketball Championship Resumes with New
Look
The WBA/Lucozade Sport
Men's Basketball Championship will resume on May 26th,
2007 at the Montego Bay Cricket Club after rain
interrupted its restart last weekend.
The format of the second round fixtures has been
modified to improve game play and somewhat give the
league a different spin. "This change will separate the
way each of the various leagues are contested, each
league will now have its own identity", commented
Deon
Williams, WBA VP of Leagues. He further went on by
saying "Instead of playing each other all over again as
it was in the first round, in this round teams will be
split into two zones of four teams each."
Zone A: Hoopers, Rainbow Storm, Catherine Hall All-Stars
and Bay City Lions
Zone B: Innercity Avalanche, Sav Hawks, Hopewell Cobras
and Railway Tigers
Here is another twist, for the first time the WBA will
introduce a six team quarterfinal, however the top team
from each zone will get a bye which automatically places
them into the semi-final round without even scoring a
point. "We are offering teams an additional benefit for
topping their zone," explained Mr. Williams. Teams
ranked number three through six will then contest a
single game elimination to see who advances to face the
two top teams who got the bye. Mr. Williams added "This
split could change the entire mix, now a lower ranked
team could upset a dominant team from the quarterfinal
stages, now the league become wide-open again."
The modified fixture concludes with a best of three
semi-final and best of three finals. May the best team win.
