WBA CERTIFIES FOURTEEN COACHES
The
Western basketball under the auspices of the Jamaica
Basketball Association (JaBA), held a level 1 Coaches
Certification clinic over two (2) weekends, June
30-july1 and July 21-22 at the Montego Bay Cricket Club
court
The main presenter was Alf Remikie – Jamaica’s National
Technical Director and duly assisted by Hubert Grant and
Ronald Beckford both certified instructors from Western
Jamaica.
Clinics began at 10am and ended by 3pm, participants
were taught theoretical and practical aspects of the
game. New prospects were given a brief intro to the game
of basketball, the structure of a team, the principles
of training sessions, shooting, passing, dribbling,
offense and defense.
Fourteen (14) persons attended the clinics including one
female. Six were from the primary school level, while
five were from the high school level, one represented
the college level and 2 from the club level complete the
tally.
Primary Schools represented: Barracks Road, Catherine
Hall, Chetwood, Cornaldi, and Success.
High Schools: Anchovy, Herbert Morrison Technical,
Manning’s and St. James
Colleges: Montego Bay Community College
Certificates were awarded to the successful coaches on
the final day. Coaches were encouraged to be
professionals in their duties as a coach and play an
active role in molding our young players, to instill
discipline and proper technique instead of placing
emphasis on winning.
“We hope the next coaching clinic planned for later down
this year will be better supported by more clubs,
schools and colleges” expressed - VP of Leagues for the
WBA, Deon Williams. He was a bit disappointed with the
turn out and further added “that there were too many
unqualified, uncertified persons masquerading as
coaches. The WBA continues to pump money into
development along with the Jamaica Basketball
Association, while others deem these efforts as
unnecessary and these are the ones who will not be
allowed onto the sidelines this season.”
Another certification clinic is being planned for later
in the year, so if you missed this one, keep posted to
the dates of the other.
