NBL Tips off with a Bang
The 2007 National Basketball league
season tipped off with a bang on Sunday June 10 with
defending champions St George’s Slayers securing an
exciting come from behind 55-54 win over last season's
finalist Urban Knights for the TVJ Challenge Trophy and
$25,000.00
Earlier
a spectacular opening ceremony which was preceded by a
Press Conference to launch the league took place and
sponsors KFC committed themselves to a long term
partnership with the league. The fast food giants
matched their commitment last year of three million
dollars in the league while new Associate Sponsor
Juciful pumped one million dollars.
Television Jamaica will be the league's official media
partner.
President of the Jamaica Basketball Association Marland
Nattie speaking at the launch said “Even with the
relatively short time since basketball has been on the
scene in Jamaica, no other sport – with the exception of
athletics, which has been Jamaica’s most enduring sport
– has offered the level of sponsorships and human
resource development opportunities that basketball has
offered its participants”.
Among some of the plans for this season announced by
sponsors KFC are the introduction of the Faces of the
NBL’s Shoot Hoops, not Guns Community Programme. These
are players will lead the charge to make basketball even
more relevant in communities.
A TV advertising campaign featuring some of the stars of
last season and some who feel they can unseat them this
year has been airing over the last few days under the
theme – “My Life, My Style, My Culture – NBL Basketball:
A My Ting Dat”
Fans are not to be left out as there will be several Fan
Power Promotions. Promotion one features a 2007 SUV
donated by GM Challenger, which may be won by 1 lucky
person who either attend games throughout the season or
who watches on TV at home and texts in an entry.
The other Promotion is a Television set, where one lucky
person who attends games throughout the season will be
randomly selected. There will also be other games and
features for the fans this year including two lucky
winners who will win tickets to a selected National
Basketball Association game in the United States.
A major component of this year’s National Basketball
League is that games will be taken to various
communities including Edgewater in Portmore, UWI Indoor
Center, Folly Oval in Portland and Sligoville in St.
Catherine.
This year’s NBL will be divided into two rounds – the
first of which will be played in a round robin format.
At the end of that round, the top two teams will play
for the mid season final.
For the second round, teams will be placed in two zones
where they will play a round robin in their respective
zones. At the end of that round the top two teams from
each zone will move to the semi final. In the semi
finals and finals, teams will play a best of three
series.
