Hoopers and Jaguars dominate NBL West weekend
Just after four games in the National Basketball League
powered by Flow in the Western Conference this weekend,
both Hoopers and the Granville Jaguars are hovering
atop the standings after dominating their back-to-back
games at the Montego Bay Cricket Club Multipurpose court
on Saturday and Sunday.
Hoopers bounced the Innercity Avalanche 81-54 on
Saturday and routed the Sav-La-Mar Hawks 98-44 on
Sunday. In similar fashion the Jaguars ravaged Hawks
70-47 on Saturday and then went on to snatch victory
over the Catherine Hall All-Stars 62-54 in overtime.
On Sunday afternoon, it was Hoopers
Neil "Chinny"
Samuels who led his team with 20 points and six boards.
Four others made it to double-figures, Levar Rose made
17 points, new signee Chayne Topey formerly of Avalanche
flourished with 16 points and 3 steals, while Andrae
Morgan and center Marlon Comrie rounded out the scoring
with 11 and 10 respectively.
Despite their best efforts Hawks' Richard Chambers and
Maurice Rodriquez finished with 12 points. Rodriquez
also blocked 4 shots and grabbed six boards.
five other Hoopers players in double figures for Hoopers
on Sunday in their big win over Hawks, as they led from
the start and never let up the pressure.
In their encounter on Saturday against Avalanche, Rose
led the way for Hoopers with 19 points, Nicholas Day
followed with 12 points and Samuels supported with 10.
For Avalanche, Cleon Morgan was the only spark with 15
points.
It took overtime to determine a winner in the the
Catherine Hall All-Stars and Granville Jaguars matchup
on Sunday evening; renewing their rivalry inherited from
the NBL West pre-season.
Both teams were locked at 8 apiece at the end of the
first term. By halftime they were still side and side
with 23 each. But it was Catherine Hall who broke the
tie outscoring Granville 15-11 and giving themselves the
a 38-34 advantage at the end of the third term. However,
not to be outplayed Jaguars turned the tables with a
16-12 flurry; forcing overtime which they went on to win
12-4.
Huwayne Blake scored 20 points and 10 boards and
Leroy "Slenko"
Lawrence dropped 13 points and 17 boards, while Dave "Puwee"
Black who played for Catherine Hall in last season's NBL
made 12 points.
On Saturday, Lawrence also collected a double-double
after making 13 points and 11 rebounds against Sav
Hawks. Black and Blake chipped in with 13 and 12
respectively. Terrence Tate's 17 points for the losers.
