Newcomers Naldi Knights Bow to
Angels
Five
(5) teams will be contesting this season’s WBA Female
Basketball League (FBL). The number increased by one as
Hopewell Rattlers did not re-enter while Sting of
Anchovy and Naldi Lady Knights from Cornaldi Avenue
joined the two year old league. The newcomers shares
good company with 2006 Champions Innercity Lady
Avalanche, Mobay Pacers and Angels.
This past Sunday, under overcast skies the Angels played
hosts to the Knights. This was the first game of the
season for both teams and a low scoring affair to say
the least. Not sure if it was the weather which affected
the girls play or as a result of not playing competitive
basketball for almost a year.
Knights won the first quarter 6-4 and outscored their
opponents 10-2 in the second quarter to go into
half-time 16-6 leaders, but this would be short-lived as
Angels awoke from their slumber with some energy to
outlast the debutants a similar 10-2 score line. By this
stage the girls on both teams started to settle into
their defensive sets, as a result only four (4) points
total was scored in the final ten minutes of the game.
All four points were scored by Angels, granting them the
edge and winning the game by only two points. The game
ended 20-18 in favor of the “halo” girls – Angels.
Bridgette Brown led her team with 7 points, while for
the losers – Shadian Hemmings sank 7 buckets.
Later today at 6pm, Mobay Pacers with marquee player
Danielle Ellis will get a chance to welcome Naldi
Knights at the Montego Bay Cricket Club court, with all
hopes to redeem themselves after losing their season
opener 56-37 to the defending champions Lady Avalanche
back on August 17.
Lady Avalanche will be in action on Sunday, September 3
when they will face Angels @ 4:30pm in Game 1, while
Pacers will challenge Sting at the same venue @ 5:30pm.
