Avalanche
Crushes Hoopers to Claim Mid-Season Title
Innercity
Avalanche has claimed the Lucozade Sport Men’s
Basketball Championship Mid-Season crown with a
hard-fought 67-61 victory over Hoopers at the Montego
Bay Cricket Club on Saturday night.
This final was both teams second meeting. Incidentally,
Avalanche also snapped Hoopers four game win streak back
on April 13.
Hoopers could not muster any late heroics with Avalanche
proving too strong in a gripping finish. Cleon Morgan
and Chayne Topey were the pick of an impressive
bunch for the winners, Morgan boast with 24 points and 3
assists, while Topey had 21 points and 3 steals.
Neville Claire 15 points (5 rebounds), Andrae
Morgan 10 points (5 rebounds) and Marlon Comrie
was one short of a double-double as he scored 9 points
(10 rebounds) shouldered the offensive burden for
Hoopers.
Hoopers enjoyed all the early momentum, spurred on by
team chemistry as Avalanche struggled to find their
rhythm at the offensive end. Avalanche began to create
opportunities but could not bridge the gap at quarter
time as Hoopers got the better of a low-scoring term to
lead 18-11.
Hoopers came out running at the start of the second-term
stretching its advantage to five points.
Both sides continued to find points hard to come by, but
Avalanche began to gain some momentum on the back of
repeated trips to the charity-stripe.
A Topey drive gave the Avalanche their first lead of the
night three-minutes out from the half-time break and the
tide continued to turn in their favour - a pair of
long-range bombs in quick succession cushioning
Avalanche a 22-12 advantage.
Whatever Hoopers' Coach Douglas Reid said to his
charges at the interval proved just the tonic as they
recaptured the lead inside three-minutes of the
final-period. However, Avalanche hung tough exchanging
baskets, but due to their third quarter cushion, Hoopers
were unable to reclaim the overall lead despite their
resilience.
