Match Report: Round Three

Hoopers Outplays Lions to Make It three in a Row

Led by three players in double figures, the only undefeated team in the Lucozade Sport Men’s Basketball Championship – Hoopers continued their blazing hot streak. Omar Bell, Andrae Morgan and Omar “Freekis” Taylor all scored 18 points respectively for a combined 54 points on their way to demolishing Bay City Lions in Saturday’s lone game.

Ironically, Lions were in attack mode at the start of the game. They were right on point and accurate in their shot selections, defensively they even restricted Hoopers to win the quarter 19-15. However, by the second quarter Lions seemed hapless or should we say Hoopers turned up the pressure and scoring 23 points to Lions seven, both teams went into halftime 38-26 in favour of Hoopers. Floyd Dixon personally made it a point of his duty to keep Lions in the game, single handedly he paved holes into his opponent’s defense, but it was to be short-lived as Hoopers ran away in the last quarter to dispose of the lowly Lions by a thirty point margin to end the game 87-47. Dixon scored 22 points along with 5 rebounds and 5 steals. He was supported by Richard ‘Lenky” Thomas who added 16 points and 5 steals.

Railway Tigers a team with so much to prove this season, displayed the desire to redeem their lackluster performances ever since they were promoted to the Men’s Basketball Championship last season. They had a tough mental match up against Granville Jaguars who in their last outing demoralizing Wolfpack by forty plus points. Tigers behind the hot hand of Dave “Puwee” Black outpaced Jaguars in the first three quarters of the game. He scored 27 points, grabbed four rebounds and had seven steals. Caustant Holness contributed 19 points along with 6 boards, 3 steals and 2 blocks. Jermaine Rerrie as is expected added 14 points and 11 rebounds in his team’s victory. Jaguars never had an answer – they never led, even with their marquee guard Huwayne “Fatman” Blake leading all scorers with 28 points were just unable to leave an indomitable mark on the match. He was supported by Leroy Lawrence with his 21 points. Tigers won 74-69.

In the second game of the evening, Granville Wolfpack with hopes to revive their plummeting season had to face Innercity Avalanche who was also recovering from a heart-wrenching one point last against Sav-Lar-Mar Hawks last weekend. Avalanche drew first blood from the start and quickly forced their opponents into relapse.

Avalanche won the first two quarters going into the halftime break 38-27 leaders. On the other hand Wolfpack regrouped and also outscored Avs 24-19 in the third to claw their way back into the game. Now only seven points behind at the beginning of the final quarter, Wolfpack were determined to hand Avs their second straight loss, but their hopes were dashed as Chayne Topey and Cleon Morgan both scored 16 and 22 points respectively to stave-off wolves. O'Neil Clarke also made the scorecard with 14 baskets, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, 5 steals and 3 blocks in his all-rounded performance. Wolfpack should be encouraged despite the loss as they really came together in this final stanza, they did outscore Avalanche, they did execute and with more time this report could have being the reverse. Vaughn Lee had a balanced game leading his troops with 18 points and eight boards. Albert Munroe scored 14 and snatched three steals while Andre Uter formerly of Bay City Lions added 13.
