Top Eight advances to D-League Cross-Zone
In
an exciting weekend of basketball, the Fruta/Oasis Purified
Water D-League will pit its eight biggest teams in the
cross-zone single elimination quarterfinals. D-League action
will kick off at 6pm with the Group One winners Central
Flames from Lucea taking on the Innercity Avalanche, Group
Two's 4th placed team.
The Flames are
keen on bettering their 2007 season when they failed to pass
the semi-final round. They are beaming with momentum after
coming up trumps against fierce rivals, UCC Blazers in
overtime, last week and ending their best season with 9 wins
and 1 loss.
Junior
Avalanche are not new to competition, they are the
development team of multiple time Lucozade Sport Mid-Season
Champions, Innercity Avalanche. They are also seasoned
participants; been around since inception. These guys
practices with the division 1 counterparts most of the
times, but they have displayed a lackadaisical approach
lately and this could cost them an opportunity to progress.
At
7:30pm, Group One 2nd placed outfit Hopewell Vipers (7-3)
will do battle with the City Knights. Vipers formerly Cobras
were relegated from the Lucozade Sport Division 1, and so
far depicted their intentions to jump back into the region's
premier basketball league. Knights' whose first season, was
an average one ended with a 5 and 5 record.
On
Sunday, the undefeated Montego Bay Boys Club Warriors (Group
2), boasting the league's best record (10-0) will take the
floor against a revered Negril Power Rangers - this match-up
is sure to be full of fire with the cross zone mix-up always
guaranteed to produce a show-down.
The
Warriors created history becoming only the first team to
have a perfect season since the Development League was
formed back in June 2006. On the other hand, Power Rangers
(6-4) are potent contenders and will create a lot of
mismatches for the team with the league's best record. Power
Rangers, ranked 4th in their group (Group 1) earned their
spot by snatching big wins when it mattered.
UCC
Blazers (Group 1) third placed team will be aiming to extend
their season when they challenge the red-hot Trelawny
Tornadoes at 7:30pm on Sunday night. In only their second
season, they have demonstrated much skill and talent
throughout. They are much better than what their 5-5 record
indicate, but not having a full complement of players at big
games affected their outcome.
Trelawny
Tornadoes is by far the best team from the parish since the
hay-days when Falmouth Flames dominated basketball
tournaments this side of the island. This season Tornadoes
surpassed expectations accruing an 8-2 record and will be
hoping that they can quench UCC Blazers when the face-off.
Western
Basketball Association's VP for Marketing Khurt Comrie
extended an invitation, "We encourage as many people,
particularly young people to come down and see what this
level of basketball is about...this should be an aspiration
level, for kids to look up and see what it’s like to
represent your club, community and your parish.”
