Match Report: Round Three

Blazers doused Flames in close clash

WITH confidence high after inflicting a close win over Sav-La-Mar J-Hawks last week, United Community Centre Blazers (UCC) were looking to make it two in a row as they traveled to Mobay Cricket Club court to take on the team from Lucea - Central Flames Saturday night.

Flames, looking to extend their own win streak to two after knocking off the Hopewell Vipers, jumped out of the gates early and never trailed until the final quarter. However, it was a spirited fourth quarter which gave Blazers a marginal 69-68 win. The dominant performance of both Blazers should send a clear message to the other teams around the Fruta/Oasis Purified Water Men's D-League this season.

Flames won the first quarter 18-13 and by halftime led 35-26. They continued the pressure in the third leading by 10 (50-40). In the fourth, Blazers had enough and outscored them 29-18 to claim victory.

Nicky Haughton scored 33 points was the stand-out player for the Blazers on his way to Game MVP honours also grabbing four rebounds and nabbed five steals. Chris Wolfe and Kareem Lewis both contributed 13 each along with a total of nine boards and three steals.

For Flames, the loss brings their record 2-1 and sees them sharing second spot along with J-Hawks in Group 1. Craig Dorman scored 21 points, grabbed six rebounds and dished two assists while Cecil Cole was scored 16 points and seven rebounds Trevor Latham, who recorded 13 points and 17 rebounds,
