Wolfpack
hold off determined Jnr. Avalanche
The Granville Wolfpack have consolidated their status as one
of the teams to beat in game two of the Lucozade Sport
Men's Basketball Championship after posting a 79-73
victory over the Innercity Jnr. Avalanche at Montego Bay
Cricket Club court on Saturday night.
Trailing by three points at quarter time, the Wolfpack upped
the ante on defense afterwards and outscored the Jnr
Avalanche in the second and third terms to go on and record
a comfortable victory.
Andre Uter was once again sensational for the
Wolfpack, the shooting guard hitting a game-high 32 points,
while Lawrence Dowman who sat out the last game
scored a sizzling 22 and Phillip "Caddie" Morrison
rebounded from a poor start in their first game loss to
Tigers to score 10 points and 12 boards.
Mickey Haughton also dropped a game-high (32 points),
while Shandain Beckford 15 points and Coach/player
Galton Taylor 10 points led the Jnr Avs in scoring, but
they received little support from their other team-mates.
In the first term, the Galton Taylor-coached Jnr.
Avalanche had the better of the action, despite squandering
numerous scoring opportunities, still managed to establish
an 18-15 lead.
Their lead was short-lived and Granville snarled back and by
mid-way the second term had tied the game at 25, before
applying relentless defensive pressure to take control going
into halftime 40-31.
The third term was no different on the part of the Wolfpack
who continued to rack up points, making 25 until Jnr Avs
changed offensive gears as well scoring 20 points in the
term but still trailed 65-51.
At the final break, the Innercity did manage to mount a
comeback from beyond the three-point line and via the
mid-way jumpers. They even locked down Granville's scorers
holding them to just 14 points while amassing 22. Despite
the offensive surge it was just a little too late as time
expired giving Wolfpack victory.
The Wolfpack (1-1) will challenge Hopwell Vipers on Sunday
night, while the winless Jnr. Avalanche (0-2) will tackle
the Railway Tigers in game twoo on Saturday night.
