KNIGHTS CRUSH STING BY 46

Sunday the Naldi Lady Knights dished out a 51-5 thrashing of the Sting in the first game of the 2007 WBA Female Basketball League (FBL) @ the Montego Bay Cricket Club court. In one of their most lack-luster performances of the season, Sting simply had no answers for the Knights.

Sting looked very nervous right from the opening tip and was going to have a hard time matching up to the Lady Knights. The score was never tied in this encounter and Sting never scored a basket during the first quarter at all! Turnovers saw Sting unable to penetrate a choking Knights defense, with Naldi’s offence firing on all cylinders, to lead at the first break 11-0.

The second quarter saw more of the same. Naldi’s Shadian Hemmings (25 points) was simply a cut above everyone on the floor. She was everywhere for the Knights, scoring, rebounding and menacing the neutered Sting at the defensive end of the court.

Despite their valiant attempts in the second quarter, Sting only managed to score a point from the free-throw stripe after Andrene Warren was hacked on her way to the basket. Sting slowed the Lady Knights’ offence allowing them to score only four points in this quarter nevertheless went into the half time break leading 15-1.

In the third, Sting resorted to their lame-duck play which has become their signature so far this season. They had another terrible shooting quarter which saw 12 unsuccessful shots go up as Lady Knights racked up 21 points to take a 31-1 lead into the final term.

Sting hit the first 4 points of the quarter, but then succumb as they had all game. Knights were simply way too strong for the undermanned and shell shocked debutants. Shadian Hemmings was dazzling as she and Pyonie Gowe put together some classy basketball. With the game well and truly in the bag, the Knights took their feet of the accelerator and cruised to victory 51-5.

For Knights, Hemmings finished with 25 points, 12 rebounds and 9 steals, Gowe had 10 points and 4 steals, while Roxanna Wallace made 7 points 5 assists and 4 steals.
For Sting, Warren finished with 3 points - who showed the most amount of fight in a David & Goliath contest.

In the night’s other game, Mobay Angels remain the only unbeaten team in the FBL when they managed to hold-off a feisty Mobay Pacers outfit in overtime. At the end of regulation both teams were locked at 38 a piece. Angels’ forward Donesha Love dominated with 17 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals. Bridgett Brown and Ladonna Lamonth added 12 and 8 points respectively. In a losing effort Danielle Ellis led her team with 10 points.
