Cornwall,
Herbert Morrison cop titles out west
MONTEGO
BAY, St James - As expected, Herbert Morrison Technical
and Cornwall College wrapped up their respective ISSA/KFC
Western Conference basketball titles on Monday after beating
Mannings and Herbert Morrison, respectively, by 2-0 margins.
Despite
not playing up to their usual high standards, both winners
were still good enough to pull away when their opponents
made runs.
Herbert Morrison beat Mannings, 74-46, in the Under-19
finals, snapping their two-games streak where they went over
the 100-point mark, while Cornwall retained the Under-16
crown after beating Herbert Morrison, 71-39.
In the first games on Friday, Herbert Morrison won 104-53,
while Cornwall triumphed, 85-45.
On Monday, the Under-19 final was interrupted late in the
game by a power surge which caused a temporary power outage
with four minutes and 28 seconds to go and Herbert Morrison
leading, 64-38.
Despite being double- and triple-teamed by Mannings
defenders whenever he went into the low post, Herbert
Morrison's Jervis Hamilton had a triple-double 18
points, 21 rebounds and 11 steals.
With Hamilton drawing the extra defenders, point guard
Jamoi Richards capitalised and had 22 points, nine
assists and three steals. Kedar Clarke came off the
bench to grab 16 points, 22 rebounds and eight steals.
Troy Reid was the top player for Mannings with 15
points and 12 rebounds. Ruel Gordon scored eight
points and had 15 rebounds, while Andre Davids got
eight points, eight rebounds and seven steals.
Cornwall looked sluggish in the Under-16 decider as Herbert
Morrison stayed close, trailing by three points after the
first quarter and by six, 23-29, at half-time.
Cornwall, however, stepped up their game in the second half,
limiting Herbert Morrison to just 16 points as they extended
their lead.
Alex McFarlane, a candidate for the MVP award for
both regular season and finals, led the way with 24 points
and 18 steals.
Christopher Ray Smith scored 13 points and had 10
rebounds; Robert McIntosh scored nine points and had
20 rebounds, while John Audley Jackson scored nine
points before fouling out midway the fourth quarter.
David Brown was the only player for Herbert Morrison
to notch double figures -- 12 points and 24 rebounds --
while Daniel Henry scored eight points and had 11
rebounds.
