Match Report:
Round 1
Pacers
Outlasts Angels in Overtime
It
was a game which could only be produced by two evenly
matched teams and it was one which had spectators on the
edge of their seats - and a quality game was produced.
Going down to the wire at Cricket Club this past Sunday,
Pacers withstood Angels' blistering pressure to win
67-63 in
overtime.
It was last season's third place finisher Pacers which
led for more than 24 minutes of play, but with beaten
finalist Angels hot on the heels Pacers could not relax.
Only five lead changes, it was an upset which Pacers
inflicted. Screaming from the first whistle, they won
the first two quarters 15-10 and 16-14, taking a 31-24
advantage to the half-time break.
Angels outclassed their opponents in the third quarter
behind some strong defense, precise attack and sheer
desire. They outscored them 17-6, eventually taking the
lead (41-37) going to the fourth quarter.
Two teams mirrored each other at both ends of the court,
scoring and making stops, but it was Pacers who got the
lead 4 minutes into the quarter. Angels who trailed for
the most part regained control in the final minutes and
seemed destined to carved out a victory, until Pacers'
Racquel Boothe with just seconds before the
whistle received a pass behind the 3 point line and with
hesitation sent the game into overtime with the score
locked at 57 all.
Veteran Danielle Ellis led the charge for the
Pacers, hitting a game-high 33 points, pulling 9 boards
and 3 steals.
Boothe was pure prowess, hitting 13 points and scoring
the final six points in overtime to claim the win with
Shanice Howe also slotting in 8 points / 8
steals.
Bridgette Brown showed form to bolster the
Angels, adding team-high 20 points and eight steals to
the score line, whilst Donesha Love was a
powerful addition with 11 points and nine boards. Nicole
Fletcher showed presence to add a handy 12 points, eight
boards and six steals but it was not enough to hold back
the surging Pacers.
