Match Report:
Round 1
Ballers get the better of Lady Avalanche
The
reigning Female Basketball Champions Unique Ballers got
the better of the most exciting female game of the
season at the Montego Bay Cricket Club Multipurpose
court on Saturday to record a huge 22 point win over
former champions Innercity Lady Avalanche.
The Ballers won the first two quarters by slight margins
(10-6 and 16-10) to build a comfortable 26-16 buffer
going into halftime. The girls on both teams turned up
the intensity in the third quarter, but it was the
Ballers who maintained their momentum and extended their
lead 49-30. In a game where the Lady Avalanche offence
was disjointed and showed slight signs that they
struggled to find any sort of rhythm. Their rebounding
was certainly at finals intensity, however they will
need to work on taking care of the basketball.
Despite the negatives they gave the defending champions
a spirited performance and trouble of the season thus
far. The Ballers were buoyed by the consistent form of
Tracy-Ann Kelly, who led the way with 23 points,
seven rebounds, four steals and one block. Zandria
Dell sank 17 points along with five rebounds, while
Dezan McLenen added good support with 12 points.
The win as an important one for the Ballers, as they aim
to remain unbeaten in their title defense.
The Lady Avalanche simply didn’t have the bench to
support their starters, but still managed to get
contributions on offence from Nicole Dias with 20
points, six rebounds and two blocked shots, while
Ladonna Lamonth followed with 19 points and seven
rebounds. Suzzett Virgo played tall by grabbing a
game-high 16 rebounds, dishing five assists, snatching
three steals along with 5 points and maintaining their
second spot on the ladder.
Game MVP: Tracy-Ann Kelly (Unique Ballers)
