JAGUARS
HOLD-OFF WOLFPACK TO BE CROWNED D2 CHAMPIONS
The
Granville Jaguars overpowered their club mates Granville
WolfPack 72-69 during a classic battle in the Western
Basketball Association Oasis Purified Water Division 2
Men’s Basketball Final at the Montego Bay Cricket Club
court on Saturday last.
It took the Jaguars a few minutes into the first half to
break down the WolfPack, but once they grabbed a healthy
double-digit lead in the third quarter they simply
out-muscled their opponents. WolfPack notched 8
unanswered points to start the second quarter clawing
their way to trail by only five, as they went into the
half-time break (42-37).
Jaguars appeared rattled for first time this season,
going scoreless in the first five minutes of the third
stanza, WolfPack getting the better of play however as
the quarter progressed
Both teams appeared very difficult to guard, they were
very explosive to end quarter tied at 49. Huwayne Blake
played at a superior level as he guided his team with 18
points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists and a block. Dinwal
Kaisley provided a 17 point, 12 rebound double-double
along with 4 block shots, and similarly Leroy Lawrence
made 4 steals along with a double-double of his own (11
points, 13 rebounds).
''I think our pressure bothered them, we kept them on
the perimeter but we were able to contest most of those
shots and the rebounding was the difference in the
game,'' Viceroy Cunningham - captain of the winners
said.
WolfPack’s Errol Jones posted 8 of his game-high 24
points (13 rebounds) in the fourth as the Jaguars
weathered the flurry of attacks which descend upon them
by their counterparts. Lawrence Dowman had 15 points
along with 7 steals and Vaughn Lee added 10. ''We took
bad shots under pressure late in the fourth quarter that
led to our demise,'' WolfPack coach Hubert “Skubby”
Grant said. Jags won the fourth quarter 23-20 and
ultimately the title of 2007 Oasis Purified Water
Division 2 Champions along with trophy and cash
incentive. In addition, both teams will advance to the
2008 Men’s Basketball Championship - Western Jamaica’s
premier basketball competition. Huwayne Blake was named
the Finals MVP.
