Brave Chiefs Upstages Avalanche for final NBL spot
Brave Chiefs defeated Innercity
Avalanche 65-54 in the deciding qualifying game to join
the national playoffs' only unbeaten team - Selassie
Gardens in the 2009 National Basketball League (NBL)
yesterday at the Montego Bay Cricket
Club.
Both
teams seemed uncomfortable as the game started, but it
were the visitors who settled first and by end of the
first stanza they led the contest 14-11.
The home team Avalanche made it even easier for Braves
in the second due mainly to many unforced errors and
turnovers which allowed Braves to convert into easy
points, taking a 27-22 lead going into the half-time
break.
After an erratic first half, the home team looked more
purposeful in the third stanza. Several key players
became much more assertive on offense and making easy
passage to the rim. Avalanche outscored Braves 20-13 and
a two-point advantage (42-40) going into the fin
ultimate stanza.
Two hundred miles from home and the final NBL spot on
the line rejuvenated Braves, as they revved up their offensive attacks. In addition they turned up
their defense, restricting Avalanche to only 12 points
while amassing 25 points - a formula which produced
success. Braves' Lascelles Johnson scored
game-high 22 points, while Brian Grant added 21.
Cleon Morgan remained the losers' top performer
with 19 points and he received support from Nicholas
Watson who made 14.
