Southern stops FIT; Leads SSC
Melbourne, FL (2-17-2008)
– Florida Southern College (FSC) took a big step towards
capturing the Sunshine State Conference (SSC) title last
night when they made all their free throws down the
stretch to hold off Florida Institute of Technology
(FIT) 87-79 to take a one game lead in the standings
over the University of Tampa who were shocked by winless
Barry University on Saturday afternoon. FSC improved to
19-7 overall and 10-3 in the SSC, and need just one more
win to equal the greatest one-year turnaround in league
history. Senior forward Andrei Grant added
eight points and six rebounds.
Southeastern Illinois gets revenge against
Rend Lake

– After losing to Rend
Lake College
earlier in the season,
Southeastern
Illinois
College
(SIC) gained sweet revenge with a 73-62 victory in its
Great Rivers Athletic Conference (GRAC) encounter last
night. Sophomore forward Andree Wilson
finished with 15 points as SIC moved to 22-5 overall and
10-3 in the GRAC.
Notre
Dame sweeps NY trip

– A trip to the “Big Apple” was just what the doctor
ordered, as after losing its last three games, Notre
Dame College swept a pair of weekend games in the city
to get back on track in the American Mideast Conference
(AMC) North Division. First they turned back

College 63-54 then returned last night
to take care of
Houghton
College 70-60 to move to 5-3 in
the AMC. Sophomore center Karim McFarlane
finished with 18 points on 9-of-11 shooting while
grabbing a team-high 10 rebounds for his 11th
double-double of the season. McFarlane also had five
assists and got able assistance from freshman
Paul Spencer formerly of Urban Knights, the reigning
KFC)/NBL champions. Over NDC's last seven games, the 6’
7” McFarlane is averaging 16.3 points and 10.1 rebounds
while shooting 57.7 percent from the field. For the
season, McFarlane is averaging 12.5 points and 8.3
rebounds per game and is ranked in the league's Top-10
in rebounding, field goal percentage, and blocked shots.
UDC dumps
Cheyney State
for the second time this season

– Center Don Powell was one of six players
in double figures as the University of the District of
Columbia (UDC) defeated Cheyney State University (CSU)
90-78 last night for its second win over CSU this
season. UDC improved to 13-8 with the victory.
Valparaiso
too strong for
Youngstown
State
Valparaiso, IN (2-17-2008)
– Valparaiso University used a late
first-half run to take a ten-point halftime lead,
then extended the lead to as many as 20 points in the
second half on its way to an easy 77-58 victory over
Youngstown State University last night in a Horizon
League game. Freshman Michael Rogers,
formerly of St. George’s College, put together one of
the best games of his young career, playing a
career-high 23 minutes and going for eight points and
six rebounds, both career bests.
Valparaiso improved to 15-11
overall and 6-8 in conference play.
Tulsa routs UTEP
Tulsa, OK (2-17-2008)
– Sophomore center Jerome Jordan had
nine points, 10 rebounds and three blocks to help the
University of Tulsa rally from an early 12-point deficit
to rout the University of Texas El Paso (UTEP) 73-50
last night in a Conference USA game.
Jordan’s inside basket
ignited a 24-5 run at the start of the second half to
overcome a 32-23 halftime deficit.
Tulsa improved to 13-10 and 5-6
in the conference.
Decatur
Christian takes conference title
Decatur,
GA
(1-17-2008)
– Senior Demeatrio Wade, formerly of
Excelsior High, scored 15 points to help Decatur
Christian win the East Central Illinois Conference title
over the weekend with an easy 58-38 victory over Uni
High. When both teams met earlier in the season it took
overtime to separate them, but Decatur prevailed 63-60.
Uni, a winner of three conference titles, was not match
for Decatur this time around, as Decatur wrapped up
conference play with an 11- 1 record and 22-3 overall.
