ALL-STARS' ONLY ONE WIN AWAY
FROM THE NBL
Defending Men's
Basketball Championship titleholders, Catherine Hall
All-Stars are only one game away from becoming second
western team to qualify to the prestigious National
Basketball League (NBL), went into the "hawks nest" at
Llandilo Court and outclassed
Sav-La-Mar Hawks
82-68.
Both teams begun the game rather lethargic. Traveling to
Westmoreland could have been a factor for All-Stars',
while for the Hawks who were recovering from a game in
the All-Island Parish league the previous day. Teams
simply exchanged baskets in the opening quarter, which
ended 14-13 in favor to All-Stars.
Goyan
Malcolm awoke in the second quarter, scoring freely
at will. He displayed his dominance, running circles
around the feathered residents. Sav had no answers as
they stayed behind as the half ended 39-27.
With only a dwindling and sparse home crowd witnessing
the onslaught, Hawks knew they had to restore some pride
and they are known throughout to be just that -
resilient! First off, Kareem "Rico" Hibbert was
assigned to guard Malcolm, and restricted the
wily player somewhat allowing his team to claw their way
back into the game although still down by ten points
(59-49) going into the final quarter.
Action resumed with All-Stars' showing more purpose as
Hawks' resorted to individual play instead of teamwork.
This selfish display resulted in their further demise
while Catherine Hall excelled to end the game 82-68.
Malcolm led his team and all players with 37 points. He
was supported by center Jermaine Dillon sixteen
points. While Kenneth Blackwood remained the
leading scorer for the Hawks with his gritty 26 points.
Maurice Rodriquez added 19.
This
win put Catherine Hall All-Stars in the driver's seat as
they are only one game away from representing St. James
and Western Jamaica in general in the NBL. Their next
game will be at the Montego Bay Cricket Club on Sunday
January 20. Let us all be there to show our support as
they face Santa Cruz Scorchers.
Sav Hawks in a game to restore some pride will face the
Scorchers on Sunday January 13 in St. Elizabeth.
